kitty1.pngAppointments

Our appointment book is computerized which allows us to efficiently make appointments for you and your pet. Our receptionists and team will attempt to accommodate all requests to the best of our ability. Emergencies are accepted anytime our clinic is open. If you feel you have an emergency with your pet, please call us or come to the hospital immediately. If possible it is best to call before coming in so that a staff member can advise you on your particular emergency.

Emergency & Urgent Care

We have a veterinarian and personnel on duty Monday-Friday only from 8am-6pm, who are trained and equipped to handle any urgent care your pet has. Usually an emergency team consists of at least one veterinarian and several technicians working together to save a pet's life. Emergencies can be things such as overheating of pets, snail bait poisoning, hit by car, and chocolate ingestion. If you ever feel that your pet needs emergency treatment do not hesitate to call or come in immediately. If possible it is best to call before coming in so that a team member can advise you on your particular emergency.

We are also available for urgent care when the condition is not life-threatening. If you feel your pet needs to be seen before you are able to get an appointment, our veterinarians will work to "squeeze" you in between scheduled appointments. When you arrive, our receptionists will be able to give you an estimate on how long you may have to wait in order to be seen.

Now, with the addition of new low-dose BI Ultra Duramune vaccines we are able to provide an improved vaccination experience for dogs and cats. The new vaccines come from Boehringer Ingelheim Vetmedica, Inc. (BI) and offer important advantages over the traditional vaccines still used in most veterinary clinics. Click here to read more.

Top Quality Veterinary Services for Brentwood, CA Pets

At Brentwood Family Pet Care, we offer general wellness care for the dogs and cats of Brentwood, Discovery Bay, Byron, Oakley, Antioch, and all over the east bay and northern California. We provide everything from wellness checkups and pet vaccinations to health certificates and emergency care (during business hours). We offer weekend and after-hours care through an associated emergency-only hospital.

Our services start with our careful and thorough veterinary examinations that include a nose-to-tail checkup. You are always welcome to stay with your pet, and we communicate with you throughout the exam so you know what we are observing.

Brentwood Family Pet Care offers preventive vaccinations for dogs and cats, which is a safe, cost-effective way of protecting your pet from many serious health conditions. We work with you to select the most appropriate vaccines for your pet based on factors such as breed, age, general health, and lifestyle. Vaccination are not only important for the health of your pet, but also the health of your family, since some pet diseases can be transmitted to humans.

If your pet should ever need surgery, Brentwood Family Pet Care is well equipped to handle veterinary surgeries ranging from routine spays and neuters to anal gland surgery; intestinal, bladder, and urethral surgery; eye and ear surgery; and more. Our team knows how to safely prepare your pet for surgery, monitor during the procedure, and support a healthy recovery. Ask us for more information about this area of our practice.

Regular examinations are very important to ensure your pet’s good health. The frequency of exams depends on the age of your pet and any ongoing health conditions. In general, we like to see our patients once a year until they reach the senior age of 6 or 7. After that, we recommend twice yearly exams. Because pets age must faster than we do, 6 months is a very long time. The more frequent visits help us spot health issues your senior pet may be developing before they become serious and much more difficult to treat.

Regular Veterinary Exams Ensure Your Pet’s Continued Good Health

When you come to Brentwood Family Pet Care, you want to know that your pet’s health will be carefully evaluated. An examination at our hospital involves a nose-to-tail check for a wide variety of indicators. Clients can always stay with their pets during a checkup, and our veterinarians or technicians verbalize what they are seeing as they check your pet so that you know what they are finding. We tailor the examination to fit you and your pet’s needs. Of course, if you do not wish to stay during the exam or if you simply don’t have time, you can drop your pet off and pick him or her up later. Similarly, if we are performing pet vaccinations as part of the exam, you can stay with your pet or wait in the lobby. If your pet is anxious or especially nervous, we can provide you with sedation to administer at home just before the visit.

Protect Your Pets—and Your Family—With Dog & Cat Vaccinations

Just as with people, vaccinations for pets are a safe, cost-effective way of preventing the development of many serious health conditions. At Brentwood Family Pet Care, we work with you to select the most appropriate vaccines to protect your pet against a broad range of diseases and conditions. This means that not every pet will receive the same vaccines. Schedules are developed based on factors such as the breed (which may imply susceptibility to certain conditions), the age and health status of the pet, and where and how the animal lives (including whether it travels from the Brentwood, Discovery Bay, Byron, Oakley, or Antioch area).

Although most pet diseases are confined to a specific species, some are more widely contagious and can even infect people. The best-known disease of this type is rabies, which affects people and many different kinds of animals and can be transmitted by a scratch or bite. There are other transmittable diseases, too, including leptospirosis, an infection that can damage a dog’s internal organs and can be transmitted to people, and parasites, such as roundworms and hookworms, which can be transmitted to other pets or people through contact with feces or contaminated soil. Protecting your pet also means protecting your family.

At Brentwood Family Pet Care, we build our recommended vaccinations around current recommended veterinary best practices.

Our most widely used vaccines include:

  • Canine distemper and parvo combination
  • Feline distemper and leukemia combination
  • Rabies
  • Lyme disease
  • Rattlesnake

However, we can provide other vaccines as appropriate for your pet. If you would like to learn more about vaccinations for your pet, please contact us.

Superior Veterinary Surgical Services for the Pets of Brentwood, CA

At Brentwood Family Pet Care, we handle a wide variety of veterinary surgeries ranging from routine spays and neuters to complex surgical intervention. In fact, we can perform almost any surgery your pet may need, including anal gland surgery; intestinal, bladder, and urethral surgery; eye or ear surgery; knee surgery; cystotomies for the removal of bladder stones; C-sections for pregnant females; spleenectomies; and tumor removals. Our veterinary staff has the experience, training, and expertise to handle this wide range of surgical services.

Of course, surgery engages our full team of professionals. Each pet has laboratory tests prior to surgery to ensure the safest application of anesthesia and pain management during and after surgery, and each procedure is carefully tailored to the individual pet. You can be assured that your pet will be carefully monitored before, during, and after surgery—both directly by our team members as well as with the most advanced monitoring equipment.

It is important to note that we believe surgery shouldn’t necessarily be a first option—it should be used when there are few or no other options or when the benefits greatly outweigh the risks. We are always happy to discuss the options with you and help you make the best decisions for you and your pet.

We are just as passionate about providing a caring environment for our patients as we are about delivering excellence in veterinary medicine for Brentwood, Discovery Bay, Byron, Oakley, and Antioch, California. That’s the way we work at Brentwood Family Pet Care.

Veterinary Dental Services Keep the Pets of Brentwood “Smiling”

At Brentwood Family Pet Care, we believe good animal health starts with the mouth. If you can keep the mouth healthy, everything else is easier. On the other hand, if oral health deteriorates, it can expose a pet to numerous health challenges. Sadly, too few pets receive the kind of preventive dental and oral care that can be so critical to their well being.

As part of our full range of veterinary dental health services, we offer ultrasonic scaling as a tool to help keep teeth clean and healthy. This service, and the polishing that follows, are much like a human dental visit with which you may be familiar (where a dental hygienist removes tartar, and then applies a cleaning paste to the teeth). However, we have yet to find a pet that will hold still for a dental cleaning, so it is necessary for pets to be appropriately sedated for dental cleanings.

When you start scheduling regular cleanings depends on the pet. It is usually not necessary until after 6 months of age. Therefore, we usually start regular evaluations at 1 year of age. On the other hand, if the pet owner performs effective home care, it may not be necessary to begin regular cleanings until the pet is 1-1/2 or even 2 years old. Dental health is especially important for smaller breed dogs, as the tooth and bone loss can cause more damage in a shorter time than in larger breeds.

Cleaning is where our dental services start at Brentwood Family Pet Care—but it’s not all we do. We also can perform veterinary tooth extractions, pet fluoride treatments, and administer dental X-rays as a diagnostic and evaluative tool. Contact us for more information on our pet dental care services.

Quick, Accurate Results From Our On-Site Veterinary Laboratory Mean Faster Diagnosis & Treatment for Your Pet

At Brentwood Family Pet Care, our laboratory tests provide powerful, on-site support for our veterinary staff—and especially for our patients. With fast, accurate results, our veterinarians are better able to make key diagnoses so that the correct treatment for your pet can be prescribed . It boils down to a simple formula—faster diagnosis can help speed treatment and recovery.

Our testing services are comprehensive and accurate. Our highly qualified, professional staff provides essential, state-of-the-art diagnostic testing with expertise using specialized equipment and standard procedures for the pets of Brentwood, Discovery Bay, Byron, Oakley, and Antioch, California.

Laboratory tests can be done for both diagnostic and preventirve care. Some of the specific tests we can perform include:

  • Complete blood count (CBC)—With a CBC test, we can determine whether there is a normal ratio of white and red blood cells, as well as check platelets and proper hydration. This information can indicate the possible presence of an infection or indicate whether organs are functioning properly.
  • Blood chemistry tests—Chemistry tests allow us to look for specific chemical markers associated with the functioning of organs such as kidney, liver, pancreas, and thyroid.
  • Electrolytes—Imbalances in electrolytes are important to detect since they can have an impact on the heart and muscles and because they can be an indicator of certain diseases and conditions.
  • Urinalysis—Using a small sample of urine, we can assess kidney function, look for possible infections, and detect diabetes.
  • Heartworm testing
  • Feline Leukemia virus testing
  • Feline Immunovirus testing
  • Parvovirus testing

For cases where other tests need to be performed outside of Brentwood Family Pet Care, we can usually get results in about 24 hours.

Some additional testing that may not be needed on an urgent basis can be requested from an associated lab. These tests include:

  • Allergy testing—Our lab tests cover a wide range of common external and ingested allergens that can affect pets.
  • Heredity testing—If you ever wondered what your nonpurebred’s heritage is, we can help.
